There are many venues where you can find local or organic foods on Long Island. Aside from the traditional natural food markets, there are farm stands, a farmers market, and several CSAs. CSA (which stands for Community Supported Agriculture) is a relationship of mutual support and commitment between local farmers and community members who pay the farmer an annual membership fee (or “share”) to cover the production costs of the farm. In turn, members receive a weekly share of the harvest during the local growing season. The arrangement guarantees the farmer financial support and enables many small-to-moderate scale organic family farms to remain in business. Ultimately, CSA creates "agriculture-supported communities" where members receive a wide variety of foods harvested at their peak of ripeness, flavor and vitamin and mineral content.
Most farms require you to pay up front for the growing season and then deliver the produce to several local pickup spots. A typical growing season is from late spring to early fall. The cost of a farm share can vary but often runs between $500 and $600 and is usually enough to feed a family of four for a week.
